So, you’re ready to become a PADI Diving Instructor, but where should you complete your PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC)?

I know this is one of the hardest decisions you have to make. It was difficult for me too. Around 20 years ago, I had to decide where to complete my own PADI IDC. There were so many great dive centres, Course Directors, websites and options to choose from. I remember how difficult and stressful it was to make the right choice.

From experience, I now know that choosing the wrong IDC can affect not only your training experience but also your future job opportunities. That’s why making a good decision is so important.

So, why should you consider completing your PADI IDC with us at Sairee Cottage Diving on Koh Tao, Thailand?

Becoming a Great Diving Instructor, Not Just Passing an Exam

First of all, we understand that your goal isn’t simply to pass the PADI Instructor Examination (IE) and become a certified instructor.

You want to become a great diving instructor, find a job, become successful and enjoy a rewarding career in the scuba diving industry.

Who knows? One day, you might even become a dive centre manager, PADI Course Director or dive shop owner yourself.

And even if you don’t want to go that far, being able to travel the world and teach people to scuba dive is an incredible career.

Unfortunately, some people successfully pass their Instructor Examination but then struggle to find work, keep their jobs or remain in the diving industry long-term.

That’s why our IDC focuses on more than simply preparing you to pass an examination.

We want to help you become a confident, capable and successful diving instructor who is ready to work in the real world.

For us, the ultimate goal isn’t passing the IE. The goal is helping you build a successful career as a scuba diving instructor.

What Happens During the PADI Instructor Examination?

To understand why our approach is different, let’s look at what happens during the PADI Instructor Examination.

At the end of your IDC, PADI examiners evaluate whether you’re ready to become a scuba diving instructor.

Ideally, you’ve already completed your previous diving courses, met all the performance requirements and finished your Divemaster training. You already have the necessary diving knowledge and skills.

During your IDC, you then learn how to teach those skills and share that knowledge with your future students.

The Instructor Examination includes several components.

First, there are two written examinations: PADI Standards and Procedures, and Dive Theory. These can be challenging for some candidates, but with sufficient training and practice, you can prepare for them.

Next, there’s a confined-water teaching presentation.

You’ll receive a skill to teach, prepare and deliver a briefing, demonstrate the skill underwater, supervise students performing it, identify and respond to problems, and finish with a debriefing.

Your performance is evaluated and scored. If you don’t meet the requirements, there may be an opportunity for a makeup presentation.

You’ll also complete a knowledge-development presentation, where you explain a topic from a PADI course or programme, such as Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver or Rescue Diver.

This presentation usually takes around five minutes. It’s something you can learn to do with practice, and it can actually be quite enjoyable.

Then there’s the open-water teaching presentation.

Instead of presenting one skill as you do in confined water, you’ll work with two skills. Again, you’ll need to give a briefing, organize and supervise the training, respond appropriately to problems and finish with a debriefing.

Once you’ve successfully completed all the required examination components, you can become a PADI Scuba Diving Instructor.

But here’s something important to understand.

The Skills You Need Beyond the Instructor Examination

There are many important aspects of working as a professional diving instructor that aren’t directly evaluated during the IE.

For example, how good are you at customer service?

How comfortable are you with sales, marketing and social media?

What about marine conservation?

Do you understand how to apply PADI Standards consistently in real teaching situations, rather than simply knowing what the standards say?

And how well can you manage risks and handle the many situations that arise when teaching real students?

These are all important parts of becoming a successful dive professional.

If an IDC focuses only on the skills and knowledge needed to pass the Instructor Examination, candidates might successfully become instructors but miss out on valuable real-world training.

They might pass the IE, receive their certification and leave with a positive experience, but still lack some of the practical knowledge they’ll need when they start working.

On the other hand, if an IDC focuses only on real-world teaching and doesn’t provide enough examination preparation, candidates may struggle to pass the IE.

That’s why I believe a great IDC needs to do both.

You need excellent Instructor Examination preparation and practical training that prepares you for your future diving career.

Why Our PADI IDC Includes More Training

At Sairee Cottage Diving, we’ve spent years reviewing and continually improving our Instructor Development Course.

We’ve developed one of the longer IDC programmes, giving us additional time to focus on both examination preparation and real-world instructor training.

That extra time allows us to go beyond the minimum requirements and include additional presentations, practice sessions and professional-development training.

Today, much of the IDC learning material is delivered through PADI eLearning, followed by reviews and practical training.

And eLearning is a great tool.

I understand why a shorter programme might sound tempting. After all, you’re on a beautiful tropical island. You might want to spend more time on the beach, watch sunsets and enjoy everything Koh Tao has to offer.

But I believe your professional training deserves the time and attention it needs.

We still complete the eLearning and all the required practical training, but we also provide much more.

We include additional repetition and practice, and we continue to deliver almost every eLearning presentation live in the classroom.

This gives our team opportunities to share personal experiences, explain real teaching situations and help you understand not just what to do, but why you’re doing it.

For me, this is one of the biggest reasons to choose our PADI IDC.

We want you to leave feeling properly prepared, not only for the Instructor Examination but also for your future career.

Our PADI IDC Training Facilities on Koh Tao

Besides our training philosophy, we also have excellent facilities at Sairee Cottage Diving.

We have two swimming pools, including one dedicated to scuba diving training.

We also have a dedicated IDC classroom that you can use throughout your course.

The classroom is air-conditioned and equipped with a large whiteboard and flat-screen television for presentations and training.

And I always joke that we even have our own private toilet, which is, of course, the most important thing!

But seriously, having a comfortable classroom where you feel at home makes learning much easier.

You have a dedicated space where you can concentrate, ask questions, practise and spend time with your fellow IDC candidates.

A Dedicated Dive Boat for IDC Training

Another major advantage is our dive boat setup.

Sairee Cottage Diving has two dive boats used for different diving activities, including fun diving, Discover Scuba Diving experiences and recreational diving courses.

But we also have a boat dedicated to our IDC training.

This is a huge benefit.

It means we don’t need to arrange our instructor training around the schedules of other diving courses.

We don’t have to wake up extremely early just to fit into another boat’s schedule, and we have more flexibility when deciding where to conduct our training.

We can organize our open-water sessions around what works best for the IDC candidates.

When I started working at Sairee Cottage Diving as a Course Director, having this dedicated boat was a massive advantage for me.

It benefits you as a student, but it also benefits me as your instructor trainer because we can organize the training more effectively.

Convenient Diving from Sairee Beach, Koh Tao

Our dive centre is located at Sairee Beach, one of the most popular beach areas on Koh Tao.

From the beach, we can take a small boat directly to our dive boat.

Many of our dive sites are approximately five to ten minutes away by boat.

This makes the logistics of our IDC training straightforward and comfortable.

We spend less time dealing with complicated transport arrangements and can focus more on the training itself.

Let’s Talk About Your PADI IDC

There are many more reasons why you might choose to complete your PADI IDC with us at Sairee Cottage Diving.

You’ll find plenty of additional information further down this page, including details about our training, facilities and everything else you need to know.

And, of course, you’re always welcome to contact me directly.

I’d love to chat with you on WhatsApp or speak with you on the phone, answer your questions and explain more about our IDC programme.

I hope to hear from you soon!

Personal Instructor Training & Examination Preparation

Throughout your IDC, I’ll work closely with you to develop your teaching abilities, dive theory knowledge, skill demonstrations and confidence.

We’ll practise classroom presentations, confined-water teaching, open-water training and the skills required for your PADI Instructor Examination.

I want you to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes during practice and learning from constructive feedback.

My Teaching Philosophy – Beyond Passing the IE

One of the most important things I teach my candidates is to understand why we do something, rather than simply memorising how to do it.

For example, knowing how to demonstrate a diving skill is important, but understanding how to help a nervous student master that skill is what makes you a great instructor.

I don’t just want to train instructors who can pass an exam. I want to train instructors I would confidently employ myself.

However, if you’d like to build even more confidence and gain additional hands-on experience before starting your first job, we also offer a PADI Instructor Internship Programme.

During your internship, you’ll have the opportunity to shadow and assist our experienced Senior Instructors on real recreational scuba diving courses, learning practical teaching techniques, student management skills and valuable tips that only come from real-world experience.

Our IDC and MSDT Instructor Internship programmes take approximately 6 additional weeks after completing your initial training.

Unlike the so-called “free” or “working” internships sometimes advertised in the diving industry, our programme focuses on structured training, quality mentoring and genuine professional development, rather than unpaid work.

Interested in gaining some extra teaching experience before starting your diving career? Contact me! I’ll happily explain how our Instructor Internship Programme works and help you decide whether it’s right for you.

Professional Scuba Equipment during your PADI IDC Course

During your IDC, you can borrow suitable recreational diving equipment from us, except for certain personal items such as your SMB and dive knife.

However, if you’re planning to work as a dive professional, I strongly recommend eventually owning your own equipment.

To help you get started with your professional diving career, we’ve put together three fantastic scuba diving equipment packages to suit different needs and budgets!

And here’s the best part: You’ll receive an incredible EXTRA 20% discount, making it even more affordable to get your own professional diving equipment!

However, if you’re thinking about investing in your own scuba diving equipment, these packages offer fantastic value!

PADI IDC Koh Tao Accommodation Options

I know accommodation is an important consideration when travelling to Koh Tao for several weeks.

That’s why we offer different options depending on your budget, comfort preferences and length of stay.

Option 1: Go Pro Dorm Accommodation

Our shared Go Pro Dorm is one of the most popular accommodation choices among our IDC and Divemaster candidates.

Accommodation costs just 300 THB per night, making it an affordable and convenient option during your professional dive training.

It’s a great place to meet other future dive professionals, make friends and enjoy the social atmosphere of our Go Pro community.

Spaces are limited, so I recommend reserving your bed early.

Option 2 – Long-term Accommodation on Koh Tao

Arrive, stay 7 nights at our resort, and explore long-term rentals.

Resort room pricing: varies — please email the resort.
Email: saireecottagekohtao@gmail.com
Request availability + your 10% pro-course discount.

Long-term accommodation ranges from 6,000–30,000 THB per month depending on comfort and style.
We can give you directions and tips when you arrive.

Option 3 – Stay at the Resort Long-term

Email the resort directly for full-stay options: saireecottagekohtao@gmail.com

How to Travel to Koh Tao for Your IDC

Getting to Koh Tao is easier than you might think! Thailand has an excellent travel network, with plenty of affordable and convenient transport options to bring you to our beautiful island.

If you’re arriving at Bangkok International Airport, you have three main options:

  • Bus + Ferry (Cheapest Option) – Travel from Bangkok to Chumphon by bus, then take a ferry to Koh Tao. A great budget-friendly choice!
  • Train + Ferry (Comfortable & Affordable) – Take a train from Bangkok to Chumphon, followed by a ferry to Koh Tao. A relaxing way to travel, especially if you choose an overnight sleeper train.
  • Flight + Ferry (Fastest & Most Convenient) – Fly from Bangkok to Koh Samui, Chumphon or Surat Thani, then continue your journey by ferry. This is generally the quickest and most comfortable option, although usually a little more expensive.

My Travel Booking Recommendation

I recommend using 12Go Travel to compare travel routes, schedules and ticket prices. You can easily book your bus, train, flight and ferry tickets online, often combining different transport options into one convenient journey.

You can search and book your tickets here:

Thailand Visa Information for IDC Candidates

Travelling to Thailand for your PADI IDC is usually quite straightforward!

The visa you’ll need depends on your nationality, how long you’re planning to stay and the current Thai immigration rules.

Passport and visa application form representing Thailand visa arrangements for international PADI IDC students travelling to Koh Tao.

Here are two common options:

Option 1: Visa Exemption (Visa on Arrival, depending on your nationality up to 30–60 Days)

Depending on your nationality, you may be able to enter Thailand without applying for a visa in advance.

Eligible visitors may also be able to extend their stay for an additional 30 days at the immigration office here on Koh Tao.

This is the easiest option!

Option 2: 60-Day Tourist Visa

You can apply for a 60-day Tourist Visa through the Thai e-Visa system or the appropriate Thai Embassy or Consulate before travelling.

This visa can normally be extended for another 30 days at the immigration office on Koh Tao, subject to approval.

Important: Thai visa rules can change, and not every nationality qualifies for the same options. I recommend checking the latest requirements on the official Thai e-Visa website before booking your trip.

Need Help With Your Visa?

Some visa applications may require additional documentation from our dive centre.

If you need any supporting documents for your IDC training, just contact me! I’ll happily help you prepare the documents we can provide and guide you through the process.

My Personal Visa Tip!

If you’re planning to combine your IDC with a holiday in Thailand, make sure you understand the visa requirements for your trip before applying.

Visa applications involving professional scuba diving courses can sometimes lead to additional questions, so it’s always worth checking which visa is most suitable for your travel plans.

Not sure what to apply for or what information you need? Just contact me! I’ve been helping IDC candidates plan their trips to Koh Tao for many years, and I’m always happy to share my experience and help you prepare.

Diving & Travel Insurance for Thailand

It is very important you have good insurance before travelling to Thailand!

Although Thailand is a fantastic and generally affordable place to live and dive, medical treatment, hospital stays and diving accidents can become very expensive, especially if you need emergency treatment or evacuation.

Nobody plans to get sick or have an accident, but unexpected things can happen, even during a wonderful diving adventure!

That’s why I strongly recommend arranging good travel medical insurance and scuba diving accident insurance before starting your IDC or MSDT training.

There are several insurance providers available, including DiveAssure and LUMA, offering different types of coverage depending on your needs.

Just make sure your insurance covers your planned diving activities, including professional-level scuba training, as well as medical emergencies during your stay in Thailand.

My advice? Don’t try to save money by skipping insurance. Having the right protection gives you peace of mind, so you can relax, enjoy your time on Koh Tao and focus on becoming a fantastic PADI Dive Instructor!

PADI IDC Koh Tao – Frequently Asked Questions

Over the years, I’ve received many questions from future IDC candidates.

Here are answers to some of the most common ones.

How long is the PADI IDC course in Koh Tao?

My IDC and Instructor Examination programme takes approximately 17 days, including scheduled rest days.

If you also choose the MSDT Specialty Instructor programme, allow approximately five additional days.

What are the prerequisites to enrol in the IDC?

Generally, you’ll need to be at least 18 years old, hold a qualifying Divemaster or leadership-level certification, meet the logged-dive requirements and satisfy the relevant first aid and medical requirements.

If you’re unsure whether you qualify, send me your current certifications and diving experience. I’ll happily check everything with you.

How much does the PADI IDC cost in Koh Tao?

My current IDC and EFR Instructor package costs 79,190 THB, including the listed training materials.

The Instructor Career Package, which includes additional MSDT Specialty Instructor training, costs 98,540 THB.

Separate PADI fees also apply.

What’s included in the IDC course package?

Your package includes the relevant professional training, practical workshops, examination preparation and course materials.

You’ll also benefit from our professional training facilities, experienced team and additional career preparation support.

I’ll provide a detailed breakdown of your chosen package before booking.

Is accommodation included during the IDC?

Yes! Our shared Go Pro dorm is available without an accommodation rental charge during the applicable IDC or IDC/MSDT programme period.

We only ask for a 300 THB per day contribution toward utilities, facilities and dorm upkeep.

Dorm beds are limited, so I recommend booking early.

Can I become a PADI Instructor if I’m currently an SSI Divemaster?

Yes!

If you hold a qualifying leadership-level certification from another recognised training organisation, you are eligible to join the PADI IDC.

Why should I choose PADI instead of SSI for instructor training?

Both PADI and SSI are established scuba diving training organisations with internationally recognised qualifications.

I specialise in PADI instructor training because I believe its structured educational system, training resources and worldwide professional network offer excellent opportunities for aspiring dive instructors.

However, the best choice also depends on your personal career goals and where you would like to work.

I always recommend researching potential employers and choosing the qualification that best suits your future plans.

Can I complete a free instructor internship instead of paying for an IDC?

The PADI Instructor Development Course is a structured professional training programme with required instruction, assessments and materials.

A free working internship cannot replace the required instructor training and certification process.

If you’re interested in gaining additional experience after becoming an instructor, contact me about our professional development options.

Do you guarantee that I’ll pass the PADI Instructor Examination?

I’ll do everything I can to help you prepare for your Instructor Examination through training, practice and personal feedback.

However, passing the IE depends on meeting PADI’s examination requirements, so I cannot guarantee the result.

My focus is on helping you become genuinely prepared and confident in your abilities.

Will I be able to teach immediately after the IDC?

Not immediately after completing the IDC itself.

You’ll first need to pass the PADI Instructor Examination and meet the applicable certification, administrative and active teaching-status requirements.

Once your instructor status is active, you can exercise the teaching privileges associated with your qualifications, subject to any local legal requirements.

Do you help graduates find dive instructor jobs?

Yes!

I offer job placement training and career guidance to help you prepare for employment.

We’ll discuss creating your CV, finding vacancies, contacting dive centres and preparing for interviews.

Although I can’t guarantee a job, I’ll help you understand how to approach the diving employment market.

Do I need to own scuba equipment before starting the IDC?

No, not necessarily.

You can borrow suitable recreational diving equipment during your IDC, with some exceptions such as your SMB and dive knife.

However, if you’re planning to work professionally, I recommend investing in your own equipment when you’re ready.

Can I join the IDC without completing the EFR Instructor course first?

Yes!

You can complete EFR Instructor training with us as part of your IDC package.

I’ll help you plan the appropriate training sequence before your course begins.

Can I work in Thailand after becoming a PADI Instructor?

Potentially, provided you meet the relevant immigration and work-permit requirements.

Your PADI Instructor certification alone doesn’t give you permission to work in Thailand.

If you’re interested in working on Koh Tao, I’m happy to discuss general career opportunities and point you toward the appropriate official information.

How do I reserve my IDC place?

Simply contact me with your current diving qualifications, preferred IDC dates and package choice.

I’ll prepare your personalised cost overview and invoice.

Once your deposit has been received, I’ll confirm your booking and arrange your eLearning access.
