Why bamboo straws?

Here at the pool bar we make a stand against the tide of plastic straws making their way from bars every night into our ocean!

Plastic straws are everywhere and once used they are discarded, most of them get to the local dump where they are burned but many end up in the sea right next to the bar!  It takes hundreds of years for plastic to degrade; by then they have endangered sea beasts and made the place look like crap!

So be happy that at the pool bar you’ll be enjoying your delicious, pool bar drink with a bamboo straw, sucking that thing makes you part of the solution not the problem!  Lets hope all the bars can join in!

What’s also great is it helps out our friend Putu!

[singlepic id=400 w=320 h=240 float=left]Putu makes the straws from local bamboo stalks found on his family land. Naturally renewing, chemical-free and biodegradable. Putu initiated this idea himself.  As in many countries and also part of the culture of Bali, this is his after-school project.  He’s working with his father to learn how to produce the straws, except when he’s playing football, flying his kite or talking with friends.  He’ll use the profits to buy schoolbooks and a mobile phone!
